Statewide Integration of PMP into Electronic Health Record Systems

The Prescription Monitoring Program is implementing a statewide comprehensive platform for healthcare professionals to review patients' controlled substance prescription history more quickly and efficiently.  The goal of the integration project is to minimize any workflow disruption by providing near-instant and seamless access to critical controlled substance prescription history information to both prescribers and pharmacists.  This platform utilizes current PMP prescription data and transfers it into electronic health records (EHR) and pharmacy management systems.  This statewide integration is a key component of Louisiana's ongoing efforts to address the opioid crisis.  Accessing and viewing a patient's PMP report obtained through the integration platform complies with Louisiana's PMP Mandatory Use Law (R.S. 40:978).  EHR and pharmacy management system representatives seeking connection to the integration platform should complete the Integration Request form which can be found in the Louisiana NarxCare EHR & Pharmacy Management System Integration Request page.

Information for Dispensers

Effective June 2, 2016 the reporting of eligible prescription transactions (Schedules II through V and drugs of concern) to the Louisiana PMP database must be submitted to the Bamboo Health Clearinghouse

The Louisiana Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) reporting requirements have transitioned from ASAP 4.2 format to ASAP 4.2B as of August 1, 2022.  The Louisiana Data Submission Guide for Dispensers for both ASAP 4.2 and 4.2B are available below:

Please familiarize yourself with the reporting requirements and make sure your software vendor is aware of the  changes.  Any data not submitted in the appropriate format will generate errors.

The Louisiana Board of Pharmacy may issue an exemption from the Louisiana Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) reporting requirement to a dispenser whose practice activities are inconsistent with the intent of the program. For those pharmacies seeking a waiver from the reporting requirements, please complete the PMP Exemption Request Form posted here and submit to the Board office by email or postal service.

Pharmacies reporting veterinary prescriptions to the PMP database should be aware of special procedures for certain data elements in such prescription transactions.  The linked document provides detailed explanations.
