Suspected Fraudulent Activity - Prescribers

For prescribers that suspect their DEA has been compromised, it is suggested that the prescriber run and review their My Rx report in AWARxE.  The My Rx report allows a prescriber to monitor their PMP profile to determine if any fraudulent prescriptions have been dispensed under their DEA.  Log into your Louisiana Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) AWARxE account at https://louisiana.pmpaware.net/.  Go to Menu, Rx Search, My Rx and run a report to see all prescriptions that have been reported by pharmacies to the PMP as dispensed under  DEA for the date range requested.  If there are any prescriptions you determine you did not prescribe, please contact the dispensing pharmacy.  If the prescription was dispensed under the wrong prescriber’s DEA, the pharmacy will need to correct the prescription in both the pharmacy software system as well as the PMP.  If any prescriptions are determined to be fraudulent, you can follow the guidelines below to determine how to proceed.

It is recommended that a prescriber report suspicious activity to the Louisiana State Police and the DEA.  Contact the DEA to determine how to report fraudulent activity.  To report to the Louisiana State Police, navigate to http://lsp.org/.  Select the “Suspicious Activity” link on the top blue Menu tab then complete and submit the requested information.  The Louisiana State Police will route the report to their narcotics division for investigation.

If it is determined that there has been actual or attempted diversion of controlled substances and you are able to provide specific details of the matter, the Board of Pharmacy can release a Pharmacy Alert upon request of the prescriber, notifying all Louisiana licensed pharmacists of fraudulent prescriptions.  Please prepare a document addressed to all Louisiana licensed pharmacists.  We usually receive a prepared document on the prescriber’s office letterhead.  Keep in mind the document prepared is the exact document we will send out in the Pharmacy Alert.  The document will need to include a statement with the details of the situation, the more details provided, the better.  However, the document should not include any personal information such as, patient names, DEA numbers, or any specific name of pharmacy(s).  The request should include the general geographical area the fraudulent prescriptions have attempted and/or have been filled in and one or more persons of contact with their phone numbers for the pharmacist to reach in the event they receive a forged prescription with the prescriber’s DEA number.  Sign the document and send via scanned email to the Board office at pmp@pharmacy.la.gov.  Once received and reviewed, the Pharmacy Alert will be sent to all Louisiana licensed pharmacists.

Please feel free to contact the PMP office at (225) 925-6496, Opt. 4 with any questions.
