Filling Prescriptions - FAQ
Can prescriptions be filed by date?
No, prescriptions must be filed numerically. (LAC 46:LIII.1123) https://www.doa.la.gov/media/cbkbh4zj/46v53.pdf.
If a pharmacy is utilizing an electronic imaging system in compliance with LAC 46:LIII.1123.J, there is no requirement for filing the hard copy. However, the electronic imaging system allowance does not include prescriptions for controlled substances (CS). All CS prescriptions must be filed numerically, with prescriptions for CS in listed in Schedule II being filed separately from all other prescriptions.
Which DEA number should be used for a prescriber without a DEA registration when filling a prescription for a Drug of Concern (DOC)?
If a prescriber does not possess a DEA registration number, no DEA number should be used when filling a prescription for a DOC. Submission of data to the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) using the NPI number of the prescriber is adequate.
