Description of the Scam - In this scam, a pharmacy receives a phone call from someone who claims to represent the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. The caller ID shows a Board of Pharmacy telephone number or NABP’s official telephone number, which bad actors have spoofed to appear legitimate. The caller then attempts to solicit information from pharmacy staff, including information that may constitute personally identifiable information (PII). Caller ID spoofing is a technique used by scammers to make an incoming call appear to originate from a trusted or official source. A familiar phone number on caller ID does not confirm the identity of the caller.
Statewide Standing Order for Distribution of Naloxone or Other Opioid Antagonists
Rebekah Gee, MD, MPH, Secretary of Louisiana Department of Health, has tody signed and issued a statewide standing order for the distribution of naloxone or other opioid antagonists. A copy of the order is available here. As authorized by Act 370 of the 2016 Legislature and the subsequent rule promulgated by the Board of Pharmacy (LAC 46:LIII.2541), the statewide standing order may be used by any Louisiana-licensed pharmacy to authorize the distribution or dispensing of naloxone or other opioid antagonist to any person who wants to have the product ready to use in the event of an opioid overdose event. The order instructs pharmacists on the information the recipient must know before receiving the product, and further, authorizes the pharmacist to prepare prescriptions in the name of the insured person, if necessary for reimbursement purposes. As indicated by Board rules, medical orders like these expire one year after the date of issue.
