Description of the Scam - In this scam, a pharmacy receives a phone call from someone who claims to represent the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy. The caller ID shows a Board of Pharmacy telephone number or NABP’s official telephone number, which bad actors have spoofed to appear legitimate. The caller then attempts to solicit information from pharmacy staff, including information that may constitute personally identifiable information (PII). Caller ID spoofing is a technique used by scammers to make an incoming call appear to originate from a trusted or official source. A familiar phone number on caller ID does not confirm the identity of the caller.
Board Office Closure - COVID-19 Impact
Due to COVID-19 illness, the Board office staff has been significantly impacted, to the extent it has affected our ability to perform our critical mission activities. The following changes have been approved by the Board leadership and are effective immediately:
- The Board office is closed to visitors until further notice. Licensees and applicants visiting the office are invited to deposit their hard copy materials in the mail slot near the front door to the office. Other options include mail service as well as our general email account at info@pharmacy.la.gov.
- The Board office telephone system has been placed on auto-attendant. There are no options to leave voicemail messages; instead, callers are invited to send their inquiries to our general email account at info@pharmacy.la.gov.
We are in peak season for the licensing of new pharmacists and renewing CDS licenses. We are prioritizing those credentials and we are working through all other licensing activities as best we can. We appreciate your patience and understanding. As soon as we have sufficient staffing levels, we will revert to our usual operating procedures.
